NS Nederland Dal Vrij · cancel
How to cancel NS Dal Vrij, and what you need to know
Nearly 400,000 people signed up this summer for the Nederland Dal Vrij promo at €49 a month. What many missed: it doesn't stop on its own. If your promo ends on or after 1 August 2026, it automatically continues as regular NS Flex Dal Vrij at €127.95 a month. Below: how to cancel in Mijn NS, what to watch for, and whether cancelling is actually the smart move.
In short
- • The promo price was €49/month. After that it becomes €127.95/month (2nd class), or €59.95 for 65+.
- • It renews automatically. NS won't cancel it for you.
- • You can't cancel in the first month. After that, daily, with a pro-rata refund.
- • You cancel in Mijn NS (app or website).

Watch out for these
1. You can't cancel in the first month
You can only cancel after one month. Set a reminder for exactly one month after your start date so you don't accidentally get charged a full expensive month.
2. Is the subscription actually in your name?
We ran into this ourselves: the subscription turned out to be under someone else's name, so cancelling in the app failed. We had to call ... and waited 35 minutes on hold before reaching anyone. So first check that the subscription is really on your NS account.
3. You can switch instead of cancel
Don't want to stop entirely? Choose 'Wijzigen' (change) instead of 'Opzeggen' and switch to something like Dal Voordeel: no fixed monthly fee, but 40% off-peak discount.
The backlash: 'NS isn't playing fair'
Passenger union Rover is critical of the automatic renewal. According to Rover, this wasn't an ordinary commercial promotion but a government-funded scheme with millions allocated, and NS would have done well to reward loyal customers too. NS says existing subscribers were emailed that they had to switch themselves. Meanwhile some travellers report unexpected charges of €103 to €214.

Should you even cancel?
€127.95 is a lot, and for some people cancelling is simply the right call. But do the math: that's about €6 a day if you travel 20 days a month, and every train ride is then free off-peak. The question isn't whether it's expensive, it's whether you use it.
Only go out once a month? Then cancelling makes sense. Go out more often and it pays for itself fast. The real problem is usually not the price, it's that people don't know where they can go, so the pass sits unused.
